Repair is a felt experience, not an apology script

Softly illustrated figures representing connection and co-regulation

Couples are often taught to apologise well. Then they apologise well and nothing changes, and they conclude the relationship is beyond help.

Why the words do not land

An apology reaches the ears of a nervous system that is still braced. If the body has not come down from defence, the words are filed as strategy, not sincerity. The content was fine; the timing was impossible.

What repair needs first

Enough settling for contact to feel survivable. That might be two minutes of silence, a change of posture, standing side by side instead of face to face, or a walk. Only then does language have somewhere to land.

A simple sequence

  • Settle and notice your own state.
  • Turn towards in whatever small way feels tolerable.
  • Say the short, true thing once there is room for it to land.

Couples who learn the order stop needing the script.
