What is somatic therapy training? A guide for therapists in India

If you trained in talk therapy, you have probably had this moment: a client understands their pattern perfectly, can describe it in detail, and changes nothing. Somatic therapy training starts from that gap. It teaches therapists to work with what the body is doing — posture, breath, tension, collapse — alongside what the client is saying.
What a somatic therapy course actually teaches
Good somatic training is not a collection of exercises. It changes what you notice. You learn to read a client's nervous system state in real time: when they are settled enough to explore, when they are mobilised into defence, and when they have shut down and can no longer take anything in. You learn pacing — how much a system can hold before it braces — and how to use your own regulated presence as part of the work rather than treating it as self-care.
- Tracking body signals: micro-cues of protest, shutdown and settling
- Nervous system models such as polyvagal theory, in language clients can feel
- Somatic experiments: small, safe in-session movements and awareness practices
- Titration and pacing: working at the speed the client's body can integrate
Who it is for
Somatic training suits practising psychologists, counsellors and psychotherapists who want a body-based lens on work they already do. It assumes you see clients; it does not assume prior bodywork or polyvagal training. Final-year trainees under supervision also benefit, because the observation skills transfer to every modality they later learn.
Choosing a course in India
A few things are worth checking before you enrol anywhere. Look for live practice, not just lectures — somatic skill is learned in the body, so a course that is mostly recorded content will give you theory without technique. Check the cohort size, because feedback on your own practice is where the learning happens. And check whether the trainer works with the population you work with: trauma, couples, grief and anxiety each ask for different somatic instincts.
You do not learn to read a nervous system from slides. You learn it by having your own state noticed, named and worked with.
Where to start
If couples are your interest, the most direct route is training that applies the somatic lens to two nervous systems at once — tracking protest and shutdown in both partners without taking sides.
